O’s Notes: Vocalist Shepley Metcalf sought out this program of less familiar material and brings it to life as Something Irresistible. Pianist Ron Roy is glued into Metcalf’s vocals and provides the perfect complement. Chris Rathburn (b) and Gene Roma (d) form a strong core to keep things anchored and swinging on tunes like “In A New York Minute”. This is not a showboating album more about purpose. It is centered on the works of poet and jazz lyricist Fran Landerman and pianist/arranger Simon Wallace. Both are veterans with credit lists beyond most musician’s dreams. Shepley does a wonderful job especially onstage ballads “What Love Knows” and “Down”. The more we listened, the more we enjoyed it!
