O’s Notes: Pianist Gelb gives us a pleasing variety of swinging originals. Dick Oats (sax, fl), Matt Wilson (d), Cameron Brown (b) balance the quartet with Amy Justin joining for vocal tracks. “On The Hudson” features Amy, a show style singer with Dick shadowing her in the background. Oats makes a strong contribution throughout the set especially on “I’m Not Supposed To Fall In Love” and then with his flute on “Evil Is In Vogue”. We liked Justman best singing “Jesse”. The band is tight across a varied program led by the composer, leader and producer Gelb. The title track is amongst the best songs, dedicated to a cute little pup, “Pickles”.
