O’s Notes: Robin in has a deep, rich and powerful voice that works on a wide range of material. For“Songbird Sessions“she pays homage to music and musicians of New Orleans where she grew up. There are elements of blues, traditional jazz, R&B and church all integrated into a passionate, dynamic session. She enlists the support of Pat Casey (b), Danny Abel (g), Shannon Powell (d, perc), Steve Masakowski (g) and Herlin Riley (d) and they help make the magic happen. Barnes may be a new name to some but she’s been singing for a long time and her skills are first rate. It’s only five tracks and about 23 minutes but this is essential listening.
