O’s Notes: Nicholas takes a ride on the contemporary side of the Jazz Rulerª with Sonic Trance. He experiments with different textures for his trumpet including wah-wah. Many of the tracks like “Cannabis Leaf Rag” have a cool 1970’s funky beat as the basis upon which a heavy dose of improvisation is applied. The ‘Trance’ extends over eighteen songs, all written and produced by Payton.
