O’s Notes: Sophisticated Lady is a jazz quartet featuring JJ Kirkpatrick (t, flugelhorn – from Portland), Misha Adair Bigos (p – from Seattle), Andrew James Boyle (d – from Los Angeles) and Gary Wicks (b -from Albany, NY). They play a mix of rearranged classics and originals: 3 from Bigos, and 2 each from Boyle and Wicks. The result is a cool set of modern jazz that sounds new but with a large dose of the old fashioned jazz formula. It has a gentle swagger that allows listeners to appreciate essential nuances from each of the musicians, especially on the slow ballads “Weightless” and “Sophisticated Lady”.
