O’s Notes: Composer and pianist Edward Simon employs a wealth of talented musicians with his band“Afinidad,“and Imani Winds.“Afinidad“includes Scott“Cooley (b), David Boney (sax), Brian Blade (d) and Adam Rogers (g) with Rogelio Boccato and Luis Quintero splitting“percussion duties.“Sorrows & Triumphs“has many contrasting approaches. Vocalization by Gretchen Parlato softens “Equanimity“. Imani Winds provide a sense of mystery and adventure on tunes like “Uninvited Thoughts” and “Triangle”. We also enjoyed the rollicking free spirit of “Triumphs”. This is a pacifying recording that has elements to satisfy a wide audience.
