O’s Notes: Greg’s Fitted Shards are his band, a quartet with Rob Clearfield (keyboards), Jeff Greene (b) and Quin Kirchner (d) and it is also the title of the final track. Ward composed the music and plays alto sax. He doesn’t hold back on the performance allowing full disclosure of emotion, passion and dynamics at all extremes. The result is a vibrant session of jazz-fusion, an expression of Greg’s life. There are peaceful times as on “Castle of Ice” and “Step Forward”, But Ward found himself in the midst of the action on “Instruction” and the upbeat “University of Opportunity”. We also enjoyed the reflective tones on “Like Mozart”. This is a fine set from Ward and company.
