O’s Notes: This duo is pianist Melford and sax/clarinetist Ehrlich. It’s an unusual pairing but it doesn’t take long to warm up to them as Marty is wailing over Myra’s rhythms on the opener “Hymn”. From there they glide through seven more tunes highlighted by “Up Do” before wrapping up where they started, with a different, more mellow version of “Hymn”. These are mostly originals with Ehrlich pushing into free space and Melford reining him in to arrive at a striking balance of neobop.
