O’s Notes: Straight Ahead to the U.K. is a new release from Segal-Garcia that touches many of her life interactions with British alto saxophonist Andy MacIntosh. They met during 1973 when they were both 20, starting their careers in Pittsburgh. They connected later in L.A. and even dated for a while. Andy moved back to England before Facebook brought them back together in 2011. That led to this recording in the U.K. with many British musicians celebrating their reunion of sorts. Cathy was sick during the recording, Andy passed in 2013, and this project was shelved until some friends encouraged her to release it in 2019. It is a good set that is a must have for Segal-Garcia fans who want a view into her straight-ahead jazz highlighted by “Hippityville”. We enjoyed “Highwire”, a jazz-fusion tune as well.
