O’s Notes: Alto saxophonist and composer Jon Gordon expands his usual quartet to a nonet for his latest release Stranger Than Fiction. The band includes colleagues and students from the University of Manitoba jazz program where Gordon teaches. Special guests Alan Ferber (tb), Orrin Evans (p) and John Ellis (b-cl) also make contributions. The music is all original, modern jazz with free-flowing solos sprinkled in. “Counterpoint“, the mellow “Bella” and the title track featuring Evans, Ellis and Tristan Martinuson (t-sax) are among the highlights.
