O’s Notes: Japanese pianist, arranger, and bandleader Mercer Hassy has an affinity for Ellington’s music, and the happiness that it brings to listeners. He freshens up a dozen classics on Duke’s Place, giving them a contemporary flavor. He injects a funky backdrop to “Satin Doll”, swings on “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore”, “Bakiff”, and “In A Sentimental Mood”. No doubt Ellington and Strayhorn were a powerhouse, evidenced by the legacy of their work ever evolving with different voicings. Hassy’s take is appreciated.
