O’s Notes: Five + Six is a sextet including saxophonists Greg Tardy and David King combined with a quintet of trombones and trumpets including leader Vance Thompson (t). They are a combination of experience and youth including some of Tennessee’s most promising young musicians. We call the ensemble a big band because the sound is powerful and brass laden. Thompson arranged eight of the nine selections, all classics including Strayhorn’s “Isfahah” and three Ellington gems notably “Prelude To A Kiss”. Such Sweet Thunder is just that!
