O’s Notes: Bassist, composer Matt Booth serves up an hour of original material on Sun Prints. He forms a band with a talented team: Oscar Rossignoli (p), Steve Lands (t), Peter Varnado (d), and Sam Taylor (sax), and allows each of them to express themselves. “Optimal Chunks” and “Ice Bear” have funky undertones courtesy of Booth and Varnado. That contrasts with ballads like “Otero Canyon” featuring Taylor. Also notable are the Latin-infused “Time to Spare”, and the passionate “You Came Along”. It’s good to hear a dose of new music in a sea of covers that dominates many releases!
