O’s Notes: This is a novel concept pairing 15 premiere, large ensemble jazz composers with a chamber, string quartet. The is much more than a sampling with 30 tracks on 3 CDs! Sara Caswell (violin) stands out on several songs, notably Alan Ferber’s “Violet Soul”, and Christine Jensen’s “Tilting World”. Anat Cohen jousts with the strings on a 4-part Suite by Truesdell. Other composers include Oded Lev-Ari, John Clayton, Bob Brookmeyer and Rufus Reid. We also embraced the energy of “Not Sorry”. Synthesis is an excellent marriage of jazz with classical strings.
