O’s Notes: Detroit native saxophonist Tony Lustig now resides in the Big Apple where he’s had the pleasure of performing with and learning from the likes of Christian McBride, Gerald Wilson, Patti Austin and Arturo O’Farrill. Taking Flight is Lustig’s debut as a leader with Michael Dease (tb),Ben Williams (b), Samora Pinderhughes (p) and Ulysses Owens (d). The music is all original and ranges from hard bop on “Prometheus” to ballads “On The Waters of Icarus” and a touch of soul with Tony bringing a bit of the funky Detroit groove on “Serving It Up”. We also enjoyed Pinderhughes work on the swinging “Change Is Comin'” and the popping finale, “Burnin’ Grease”.
