O’s Notes: DePaul University has one of the best jazz big bands in the country thanks to director Bob Lark. They play beyond the notes adding improvisation on top of precision. They invited pianist Jim McNeely as guest soloist for this recording. The layering of the brass is excellent especially on “Centerpiece” with vocals by Milton Suggs. We also enjoyed “Round Midnight” and “Deer Seitanzer”, one of three compositions written by McNeely.
