O’s Notes: Pianist Garry Dial and Dick Oatts (sax, fl) composed a suite of music to pair with lyrics of Walt Whitman. The Temple University Concert Choir conducted by Paul Rardin, The Temple University Vocal Jazz Collective conducted by Mitos Andaya and New York Studio Vocalists deliver fifteen songs over two discs. The vocals sound like church choirs on some selections but there is also spoken word on “To A Pupil”. We enjoyed the music mostly on the first disc especially on “To One Shortly To Die”. The scope is wide on this 2-disc outing and the lyrics can be inspiration particularly on the 2nd disc where the warm vocal harmonies are prevalent.
