O’s Notes: There is pain and anger coming through the notes of Wiley’s sax. The liner notes explain each of the ten songs, each inspired by African-American spirituals. The basis is gospel music and call & response slave chants. “Angola” is the Angola State Prison, one of the last antebellum plantations in Southern Louisiana. The band includes pairs of bassists, vocalists (1 opera, 1 scat) and violinists along with one trumpeter, drummer, trombonist and Wiley on sax. They convey the harsh emotions through sound.
