O’s Notes: This is an extraction of the best songs from Lee’s first two recordings on Columbia, First Course (1976) and Captain Fingers (1977). He was amongst the pioneers of the West Coast contemporary jazz. It extended from fusion to a more rhythmic and funk R&B feel. Lee quickly established himself as one of the premier guitarists in the genre. The addition of supporting musicians like Patrice Rushen (p), Harvey Mason (d), Dave Grusin (p), Ray Parker (g), Anthony Jackson (b) and Tom Scott (sax) helped make this music strong. As Lee states in the liner notes, the music is similar yet different from today’s ‘Wave’ jazz. Even with the 1970’s wah-wah, the music is still accessible today.
