O’s Notes: The Better Angels of Nature“was a plea for the greater good just prior to the American Civil War. These songs reflect on the period and are performed as jazz, the music form that spilled out of the African American community post war. Patriotism is in abundance with “Battle Hymn of the Old Republic”, “Battle Cry of Freedom” and “Oh Freedom”. Saxophonist and bandleader Brian McCarthy does a fine job here. Among the best are the swinging grooves of “All Quiet Along the Potomac To-Night” and “The Bonnie Blue Flag”. Listen for standout solos from Daniel Ian Smith and Stantawn Kendrick both on tenor sax, drummer Zach Harmon and Justin Kauflin (p). This a timely message as were sure need national unity now!
