O’s Notes: Bassist Luke Stewart has been recognized by several sources as a rising star and creative genius. He leads a trio with Brian Settles (t-sax) and Chad Taylor (d) for The Bottom, his latest release. Percussion reigns heavy on this encounter whether it’s the Mbira imparting an exotic feel on “Reminisce” or the doting sax, syncopated beats underlie a lot of what’s happening here. Of note is the free jazz vibe on “Angles”, an 11+ minute adventure in the middle of the set and the raucous title track.
