O’s Notes: The Great Lakes Quartet is a powerful grouping with Henry Threadgill on sax and flutes, bassist John Lindberg, timekeeper Jack DeJohnette, and leader, Wadada Leo Smith playing trumpet. There are four movements Gold, Diamond, Pearl and Sapphire Symphony’s each on a separate disc. Johnathon Haffner replaces Threadgill on Sapphire. The music is beautiful as each of the musicians blossom in their space bringing Smiths Chicago Symphonies to life.
