O’s Notes: Jaco is considered one of the pioneers of the electric bass. While he wasn’t the first to play it, he certainly was among the first to push the bass to center stage, leading melodies, popping and using harmonics to expand the scope of his instrument. This ‘Essential’ collection has 27 of his best fusion songs including solos efforts like “Portrait of Tracy”, duets like “Donna Lee” with Alias on congas to more extensive collaborations. These are mostly original compositions performed in the mid to late 1970s. Herbie Hancock (p), Lenny White (d), Don Alias (congas, perc), Joe Zawinul (p) and many others are present here. There are also songs from his albums with Weather Report and Joni Mitchell. This is a brief yet detailed picture of a genius who left us prematurely at 35.
