O’s Notes: Boyd Lee Dunlop is an experienced pianist who takes us on an improvisational experience in this solo endeavor. Boyd is in his late 80s enjoying a rebirth in his musical career. The Lake Reflections is an appropriate title as most of the music has a peaceful and calming feel. Each piece is inspired by the work of free-lance photographer Brendan Bannon, the man who encourages Dunlop to record Boyd’s Blues two years ago. Improvisational is more free spirit than free jazz in this case and Dunlop takes the creative liberty to let his inner harmonies shine. There are some elements of ragtime interweaved into the landscape and although Boyd plays with a lot of dynamics, it is a calming set covers a wide range of styles.
