O’s Notes: The core of the band is Jeff (sax, fl), John (b) and Gerald (p) Clayton but they are evermore potent with Terell Stafford (t) and Obed Calvaire (d). The music on this CD is derived from the brothers’ reflections of songs and dances. The energy of “Battle Circle” comes from Gerald reminiscing about break dancing in high school! The brass interplay is excellent especially on “Smarty Pant’s Dants”. Calvaire places sharp accents along the way with brief sharp solos as well. We like the direction the Clayton Brothers are going as they expand modern jazz with yet another strong showing.
