O’s Notes: Michael Dease is one of the most melodic trombonists on the jazz scene with sweet, warm tone. This is his first album of all covers (10), and The Music of Gregg Hill is a great choice. The musicians are mostly rising talents with polished pianist Geoffrey Keezer appearing on six tunes, notably “The Sleeper”. Luther Allison handles the keyboards on the other four, notably ”Summer Nights”. Dease switches to baritone saxophonist with Joel Perez playing trombone on “The Goodbye Blues” and Virginia MacDonald on clarinet. They wrap up with “The Other Shoe” to cement a fine performance.
