O’s Notes: The Road Less Traveled marks 20 years of musical pleasure from the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra. We don’t ordinarily associate Knoxville with jazz but the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra is a powerful large ensemble led by director and co-producer Vance Thompson. This edition includes guest artists Michael Dease (tb), Eric Reed (p), Mike Seal (g) and Greg Tardy (b-cl, t-sax). Carmen Bradford adds beautiful lyrics on “The Peacocks” and “At Last”. There’s a taste of the south on “Tumbling Tumbleweeds” and “The Tennessee Waltz” but they also shine as a traditional jazz ensemble on “Woodyn’ You” and “Rhythm-a-ning” capping a fine set.
