O’s Notes: The session opens up with “Magenta”, an avant-garde piece. This is a strong indication of where the season is headed. Jason leads the swinging “Crux” engaging in a fluid exchange with Russ Johnson (t). Mike Holober (Rhodes) leads the charge on “Shift of Color”, a laid back relaxing tune. Drummer Gerald Cleaver opens the title track, another free jazz tune. And yes, you guessed it, Cameron Brown (b), the anchor of the quintet opens “Slip” a syncopated creative tune. He rises to the occasion again on “Jealous Moon”, another mellow tune and our favorite of the session. The collection is not easily classified but is well executed along Rigby’s intentions.
