O’s Notes: Pianist Mulgrew Miller and Wingspan, a sextet, perform ten new compositions on his first release in the MAXJAZZ piano series. The music is pleasant with a Spring-like feel. Richie Goods walks the bass around the tight beats from Karriem Riggins (d) while Steve Nelson (vibes), Steve Wilson (s), Duane Eubanks (t) and Miller lead with melodies. From the softness of “Holding Hands” to the Latin feel of “Samba D’Blue” along with neo-bop tunes like “Spectrum” Mulgrew shows his ability to write and perform a wide variety of jazz featuring the entire band.
