O’s Notes: Pianist Ezra Weiss pays tribute to the late singer and pianist Shirley Horn. Steve Williams (d) and bassist Corcoran Holt round out the trio. Shirley Nanette provides vocals on three of the nine tracks notably “I Wish I’d Met You”. Weiss was inspired by Horn and composed five of the selections in her honor. Among the best are the warm ballads “Estate”, “I Love You Porgy” and “Blues For Shirley”. This is one of the best dedications to Shirley that we’ve heard. Ezra captures the unique elements of pace and dynamics that were a part of Horn’s signature. This performance places Weiss among the elite musicians on the jazz scene today.
