O’s Notes: Composer and drummer Reggie Quinerly takes a twist into percussion-laden, Afro-Cuban music for The Thousandth Scholar. He performs in a quartet with pianist Manuel Valera, Matt Brewer on bass, and percussionist Samuel Torres. The songs are mostly vibrant but include piano-based ballads like “Invernal”, a welcomed break from the mostly upbeat heavily syncopated tunes like “Sam From Brooklyn” and “Skain’s Blues” or cool mid-tempo tracks like “Felipe Jacinto”.
