O’s Notes: Composer, trombonist Michael Pallas is a versatile musician who cuts across many genres. He’s played alongside many artists over the last 15 years and steps into the spotlight on his debut as a leader on Gateway. Pallas mixes straight-ahead jazz with Latin, hip hop and fusion to deliver his message. He gets support from Lomar Brown (sax), Yeissonn Villamar (p), John Benitez (b), Jonathan Barber (d), and Nelson Mathew Gonzalez (perc). Rapper Ghazi Omair takes the mic on “Counterfeit Blues” and the urban beat continues on “The Verdict” & “Beyond”. They swing on “El Boli”, there is a pumping, club beat on “Next Exit” contrasting the relaxed Latin groove of “Disu’s Dream”. All told, this is a very good album.
