O’s Notes: Drummer Louis Hayes leads this session, keeping time for his quintet with Helio Alves (p), Steve Nelson (vibes), Abraham Burton (sax) and Santi DeBriano (b). The 71-year-old Hayes still has a lot of sparks and infuses punchy accents along the way as well as a few explosive solos. The program is mostly originals written by band members with a few standards. “It’s To You” written by Burton features a strong solo from DeBriano. We also enjoyed “Check In” and their covers of “Double Rainbow” and “Angel Eyes”.
