O’s Notes: A tuba trio is not your standard jazz club band and this is not an average jazz CD. The music is all centered on the bass clef. Joseph Daley (tuba) invites Warren Smith (marimba, vibes, perc) and Scott Robinson (sax, horns, fl, cl) to perform six new compositions and one cover for The Tuba Trio Chronicles. This is a tribute to the late saxophonist/flutist Sam Rivers. Both Smith and Daley were members in Rivers’ celebrated tuba trio forty years ago. This program has generous amounts of open space with improvisation that stretches your mind as well as the boundaries of the instruments but always staying within reach. This is a different take on the down low, best stated on “Terrarium”.
