O’s Notes: Composer, conductor and tenor saxophonist Chelsea McBride has a large (19-piece) ensemble called the Socialist Night School. Chelsea is one of Toronto’s best young talents and“The Twilight Fall“is her debut as a leader. This is a contemporary set of 10 vibrant selections that cross a range of tastes in a unified session. Alex Samaras adds vocals to “Smooth” (What I Should Have Said Instead) and “Spirits” two of six songs with lyrics. Daniel Jamison correctly characterizes this album as an integrated journey through life in his liner notes. We encourage you to read the accompanying booklet as you listen! The band punctuates the lyrics and melodies without overstating its power but you always know they are capable. Keep your eyes on McBride, only 24 at the time of the recording, she has much more to give us.
