O’s Notes: Canadian jazz pianist David Restivo has played by all of the rules, absorbing all he can from the books and the masters including Mike Marley, Dave Holland, Jon Hendricks, Kenny Wheeler, Mel Tormé and John Pizarelli. It pays dividends on“The Waves“where he assembles a fine quintet to play a mellow, fusion/modern jazz set. “Honeydew Harbor” features trumpeter Alexander Brown playing with warm tones against Restivo’s muted Fender Rhodes. Kelly Jefferson (sax) explodes on “Subway Muse”. The horns remain strong as bassist Luke Sellick ads a noteworthy solo on the title track. The predominant relaxing theme is stated with “Melodies of Hope and Healing” and restated on “Kurt and Mark” a tribute to Mark Turner (sax) and Kurt Rosenwinkel (g)“capping a solid set.
