O’s Notes: A Moving Sound is a Taiwanese band including vocalist, director Mia Hsieh. They combine with ETHEL, an atypical New York-based classical string quartet to produce The Wheel of Life. ETHEL is Ralph Farris (viola), Dorothy Lawson (cello), Todd Reynolds (violin), and Mary Rowell (violin). They are differentiated using amplification and generous improvisation. The combination is unique and tilted towards Asian music. “Goddess Of The Sea” is an adventurous opener setting the stage for a musical journey. We liked the racy strings on “Dynasty Falls”, the peaceful tranquility on “Rite Of Passage” featuring vocalist, and the exotic chants on “Starshine”.
