O’s Notes: Saxophonist/clarinetist Jeff Lederer teams up with vocalist Mary LaRose and the Wildebeest Wind Quintet on There’s A Yearnin’: Music for Winds and Voice. The Quintet is Michel Gentile (fl), Katie Scheele (oboe), Mike McGuiness (cl), Sara Schoenbeck (bassoon), and Nathan Koci (French horn). LaRose breathes poetry into the music, a convergence of jazz and notated music that surfaces unheard works by Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman, and Oliver Nelson. It is yet another unique feather in Lederer’s cap. Among the best selections are “Three More Seconds”, “Nocturne”, “Lem and Aide”, and the title track.
