O’s Notes: Tuba player Jim Self and guitarist John Chiodini are back in action on Touch And Go, Act IV of their collaborations, (one with the David Angel Jazz Ensemble). Self’s warm tuba melodies are a refreshing change of pace on the jazz scene. Chiodini provides strong accompaniment and solos as well. Ron Stout (t), Ken Wild (b), and Kendall Kay (d) round out the band. We enjoyed the swagger of “Amber”, “Whisper Not”, and Angel’s 13-piece ensemble on “Prolepsis”. Wild sets the tone on “Lament”, a samba arrangement. Excellent liner notes detail each selection and the canine crew affirm the finale!
