O’s Notes: This quartet features pianist Michael Jefey Stevens and saxophonist Don Aliquo. Both musicians are transplants to Tennessee where they connected with drummer Tom Giampietro and Jonathan Wires (b) from Mississippi. They take us on a journey through their world with fresh compositions from each of their pens. Aliquo’s “Chant 1 and 2” are more on the free jazz side his “Longing” is a rich ballad. Stevens’ two contributions are strong especially “Spiritual”. We also enjoyed Wires’ “Out in the World”. There is some neobop brewing in Tennessee, and we like the taste of it!
