O’s Notes: Guitarist James Emery takes a step into contemporary free jazz space. He addresses the set with a quartet featuring Tony Coe (ts, cl), Franz Koglmann (flugelhorn) and Peter Herbert (b) and also with a full orchestra. The latter includes five movements where the orchestra provides a baseline structure for Franz, Tony and James to improvise. The selections contain both powerful and delicate passages with lots of creativity, especially the racy “Movement V”. The 5 quartet selections are adventurous but without the detail of the big band, yet fulfilling. All of the compositions were written by Emery.
