Jazz Ruler Type: Bebop
O’s Notes: Guitarist and composer David Gilmore assembles a strong quintet for Transitions, his latest release, a tribute to the late jazz legends Bobby Hutcherson, Toots Thielemans, Victor Bailey and Woody Shaw as well as to living legends Annette Peacock and Hermeto Pascal. The program includes refresh work from these luminaries as well as two original compositions. Mark Shim (sax), Carlo DeRosa (b), Victor Gould (p) and E.J. Strickland (d) round out his band. Vibraphonist Bill Ware and Gregoire Maret (harmonica) make guest appearances on “Farrallone” and “Bluesette” respectively. Gould delivers great work on “Blues Mind Matter” contrasted with the funky, playful spirit of “Kid Logic”. Gilmore is comfortable in all cases and delivers a product that will entice lovers of Modern Jazz as well as jazz-fusion.
