O’s Notes: The late Roger Burn was a tremendous musician (keyboards, vibes, d, perc), singer, composer, arranger and bandleader. We lost him all too soon to cancer at 46 in 2009. Trilogy is a compilation of Roger and his band Shapes. The lineup is littered with some of the best jazz artists on the planet! Guitarist Mike Stern lights it up on “Oddly Enough” and follows that with Russell Ferrante (keys) on “Cluster’s Last Stand”. The highlights are plentiful including, “What The Dickens” featuring producer Jimmy Haslip (b) and that’s only through 5 of 38 tracks! Bela Fleck (banjo), Flora Purim (vocals), Arito Moreira (d) and Dean Taba (b) are just a few of the stars on this compilation. There’s a lot of good music here over three discs. They keep it fresh with tastes of Latin, some country blues, pop, and a lot of great contemporary jazz-fusion.
