O’s Notes: Trumpeter and composer Tom Harrell strays away from the norm on TRIP, his latest release, a collection of fresh, modern, original pieces. To start, his accompaniment excludes piano or guitar rhythm instruments. Instead Harrell forms a quartet with Mark Turner (sax), Ugonna Okegwo (b) and Adam Cruz (d). Each of these talented musicians gets a chance to shine especially during the six part “Adventures of A Quixotic Character” the core of the session. This is a different groove but one that grew on us favorably and well worth checking out!
