O’s Notes: This is a celebration if the work of Leon Thomas who brought vocalization to the world of free jazz performing along with Pharoah Sanders and Carlos Santana. Lea, a skillful percussionist, strikes the right vibe and facilitates a strong performance from the rest of the band. They deliver Leon’s spiritual message with passion and warmth. Dwight Trible does an incredible job with the vocals and Ernie Watts (sax), Patrice Rushen (p), and Gary Brown (b) round out the team. The live performance was recorded at Yoshi’s in Oakland with concert length solos and interaction. By the time you get to the end of the 1st disc (of 2), you will wish you were there. “Reaching Up” is our favorite among many jamming tunes.
