O’s Notes: Volk is the sophomore effort from saxophonist Ochion Jewel again performing with Amino Belyamani (p), Sam Minaie (b) and Qasim Naqvi (d). Guest artist Lionel Loueke (g) plays on two selections notably “The Master”. There is a blend of folk music with fusion and free jazz that is rather edgy but always maintains at least a thread of structure. Jewel leads the melodies tenor sax and composed half of the selections. Our favorites were the improvised folk melodies notably “Oh Shenandoah” and “Give Us A Drink of Water”.
