O’s Notes: Canadian drummer, composer Anthony Fung now resides in LA where he leads a quartet with David Binney (a-sax), Luca Mendoza (p) and Luca Alemanno (b). Fung also invites several guest artists to the party. We liked the reggae undertones of “Sonny’s Blues” featuring Marcel Camargo (g) and Alemanno, also the heavily syncopated “Roots” featuring percussionist Oscar Cruz, and “What does It Mean To Be Free” with Andrew Renfroe (g) & Paul Cornish (keys, synth). The vibe is solid with variety that encourages repeated listening.
