O’s Notes: Brazilian pianist, Sagebin fuses style elements from Baden Powell’s Afro Sambas with Coltrane’s Bebop. His interpretations spawn five new compositions plus six rearranged classics. The later include “Laura”, “Fascinating Rhythm” and “Luiza”. The results are pleasing – a nice balance of jazz from above and below the equator. Bassist Santi DeBriano and Paulo Braga (d) round out the trio with strong performances but it is the full-bodied richness of Sagebin’s piano that is prominent.
