O’s Notes: For Wish Me Well Mark Masters has focused on the works of the late Gary McFarland, most famous for his orchestrations for Gerry Mulligan. These are new arrangements that include three pieces recorded for the first time, most notably “Monk’s Sphere”. We found it easy to get engaged on “Weep” and appreciated the beautiful solos throughout. Gary Smulyan (bs) and Tim Hagans (t) lead the charge. Steve Kuhn (p), a close friend of McFarland shines on the title track with Darek Oles (b) and Joe La Barbera (d) in a trio format. McFarland died prematurely at 38 in 1971 but this effort rekindles his genius courtesy of Masters.
