O’s Notes: This 1957 recording captures two jazz legends playing together at The Five Spot Café in New York. The combination lasted less than a year but was truly magical while it lasted. Monk and Coltrane were a perfect complement, reminding listeners of another great pairing: Dizzy and Bird! The rest of the band provided the glue including Wilber Ware (b) and Art Blakey (d). There are only six tracks here but they all pack a punch. Thanks to Fantasy for optimizing it with SACD.
